Philadelphia Apartment Fire: Worst Fire Of The City
One of the worst fire incidents took place in a housing apartment of Fairmount sending the waves of shock and chill in the minds and hearts of the people of Philadelphia on January 5th. Around 12 people were killed, 8 being children and 4 adults.
The fire broke out around 6:30 am in morning on the second floor of the three-story building owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, the fourth-largest housing authority in the United States.
The firefighters faced heavy smoke and very little visibility while entering the building. Though they were able to rescue one child, sadly the child couldn't survive. Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy informed that eight people escaped from the burning building, while at least two people were rushed to the nearby hospital.
The cause of the fire is still not found, investigations are underway. Officials believe that the cause of the fire might be due to overcrowding in the apartment. The apartment was meant to accommodate 2 families but 26 people were found residing in that structure, 8 on the first floor, 18 on the second and the third floor.
Jenna Collins, a housing attorney at Philadelphia's Community Legal Services explained that it's not unusual to see overcrowding in the apartments, since the rise in unemployment means people cannot afford most of the habitats.
Another cause for the fire might be the failure of smoke detectors. There were at least 6 smoke detectors installed in the apartment which was last inspected in 2021. The residents explained that sometimes the tenants might remove the batteries of the detectors while cooking or smoking, and so the housing authority should replace battery-powered smoke detectors with hard-wired detectors to prevent such incidents.
12 lives were lost in the incident and we cannot even imagine the pain that the families of the victims are experiencing as of now. Kids with a whole life ahead of them lost their lives in such a horrible manner. The screams of the victims and the pain is unimaginable, the only thing we can do now is praying for their souls to rest in peace.
May God be with the families in these hard times!
