Mob Lynching In Jharkhand: Killing of Sanju Pradhan
Jharkhand has been in the headlines for its mob attacks and the reason why the state assembly had passed an Act in December 2021 to prevent such incidents. Under the prevention of mob violence and mob lynching act, individuals responsible can be imprisoned for life if found guilty.
But this could not stop the residents of Besrajara village of Simdega district from carrying out another horrifying act. On Tuesday a 35yrs old man named Sanju Pradhan was attacked and dragged out from his home by the mob after which they took him to the weekly haat where he was beaten to death. The mob was so furious that they burnt the body of the individual after beating him to death. Sanju Pradhan’s wife Sapna Devi while reciting the incident also mentioned that the act was carried out in the presence of a few police officials, who were spectators to the incident and they didn't do anything to stop it.
The villagers believed that Sanju Pradhan was involved in the illegal cutting and smuggling of wood. A complaint was also registered to the forest department by the villagers against Sanju Pradhan, but no actions were taken and so the mob decided to take the matter into their own hands. Around 100-150 people mercilessly killed a young individual in the name of justice.
Sapna Devi who watched her husband killed by 100 people, begged for help, screamed but couldn't do anything to save him. This trauma will live with her for the rest of her life and nothing can be done to bring her previous self back. Such incidents psychologically affect family members to a very bad extent because the guilt of not being able to do something about it eats them from within.
Making laws and acts will not stop the crime or the criminals but the execution of it will.
On Wednesday, Simdega DC Sushant Gaurav and SP Shams Tabrez visited the victim’s family assuring the arrest of the people responsible. DC also requested the BDO to keep a count of trees and mark them to avoid illegal felling of trees.
Based on the statement of Simdega SDPO an FIR has been filed against 38 people and 3 have been arrested on Thursday.
Hopefully, the family of the victim gets justice and the criminals get the punishment they deserve.
